The result is a big waste of time that could be used to do something else instead.

Here are 12 things you’ve probably been cleaning wrong your entire life, and the “correct” or quickest way to clean them.

1. Cheese grater

Are you still using a sponge to rub all the cheese away? Wrong! Just shred a potato with the cheese-dirty grater. The oxalic acid contained in the potato will quickly get every cheese residue off!

2. Shower head

The best way to perfectly clean and de-clog a shower head? Wrap it into a bag filled with white vinegar and leave it there for one hour. After that you’ll just have to wipe it clean with a wet cloth and it will be shiny as the good old times.

3. Coffee maker

Just fill the water chamber with a mixture of half water and half white vinegar and run a half-brew cycle with no coffee grounds. Then let it sit for around a hour before finishing the cycle. Empty it and run a fresh water cycle or two, until the vinegar smell is gone.

4. Blender

Don’t take every removable piece of your blender away to clean it, it can be much easier than that! Just fill your blender with hot water and add a little dish soap after rinsing it, then give it a whirl and rinse again. Isn’t it much cleaner now?

5. Toaster

All it takes to clean the outside of your toaster is a sponge, some cream of tartar and some water. Rub it all around and be surprised from how shiny it looks again.

6. Paintings

Just gently rub half of a bagel over your paintings to clean them from dust.

7. Cutting boards

As you probably have noted, soap only is not the best solution for cutting boards. The best thing you can do here is rubbing some kosher salt with half lemon along the board. After that, you can wash the it with soap and water.

8. Mattress

Step 1: vacuum it (easy), step 2: sprinkle baking soda all over the top of the mattress, step 3: after a few hours, vacuum it again!

9. Toothbrush

What? You didn’t know you could clean your toothbrush? Just put it upside down for a few hours in a cup filled with white vinegar, rinse it and you’re done. And don’t forget to replace your toothbrush every three months!

10. Microwave

Put a bowl filled with water and vinegar inside and microwave it on high for 2 minutes. That’s it!

11. Toys

It’s so easy you probably never thought about it. Just clean all the hard plastic toys in the dishwasher instead of individually hand-washing them. Just make sure they are big enough to avoid falling from the basket and that they won’t melt at high temperatures.

12. Oven

No more crazy scrubbing to clean your oven. Use these 5 simple steps instead!
1: Make a paste using water and baking soda. 2: Spread it all around the inside of your oven and let it sit overnight. 3: Use a wet rag to wipe out the baking soda as much as you can. 4: Spray some white vinegar and wipe it down after a couple of minutes. 5: Turn on your oven low for 20 minutes to dry it.
