Alexander Kljatov is a Russian photographer and his beautiful macro photos of snowflakes are going viral all around the web.
You’ve certainly seen some other amazing snowflake shots in the past, but what’s special about Alexander’s work is that his macros are taken just with a point and shoot camera (a Canon A650) and a $50 Helios 44M-5 lens taken from an old Zenit SLR. He attached this lens to a custom-built wooden rig with the front glass facing the camera and subsequently wrapped everything with black plastic (if that looks complicated, he has created a blog post with the complete process here).
As you will see in the following gallery the results are outstanding, we never would have thought that these macros were taken with a point and shoot camera taped to an old lens. That’s the proof that you don’t always need expensive equipment to take striking images.
