In these trying times, we all need to look after each other. There no place for selfishness or greed; we’re all in this together and we’re only going to get through it together.

Anything we can do to help each other matters.

That’s why we’re so pleased to see this distillery in Portland, OR selflessly assisting their local community.

The Shine Distillery & Grill is turning their alcohol into hand sanitizer and giving it away free of charge.

The distillery has long been making their own cleaning solution out of the batches of alcohol they produce that can’t be used for human consumption.

When they’re in the process of distilling their own alcohol, the first round of alcohol that’s produced is not drinkable, so instead of wasting it they’ve been turning it into a cleaning liquid.

Now that everyone is being extra mindful of keeping their hands clean and disinfected, the hand sanitizers have been flying off the shelves and left people struggling to get their hands on some.

So Jon Poteet, the owner of Shine Distillery & Grill, started to wonder if they could perhaps use the alcohol they normally use for cleaning solution to make hand sanitizer instead.

Poteet and his team did their research and determined that it was indeed possible and promptly got to work.

But while some people are taking advantage of the hand sanitizer shortage by selling bottles of hand sanitizer online for ridiculously elevated prizes, the Shine Distillery & Grill are giving their home-made sanitizer away for free.

“Ultimately, I’m part of the community, I want my friends and neighbours to be happy and healthy. All my neighbours getting sick and going down doesn’t do me any good. I want to be in a healthy community, and it feels good to be able to give back.” Poteet told Fox 12 Oregon.

That’s exactly the kind of attitude we wish that everyone would have. It is so important to stick together and look after each other.

Hand sanitizer is an important tool in the fight against COVID-19 and nobody should profit from peoples need to protect themselves and others.

Shine Distillery & Grill’s hand sanitizer consists of 80% alcohol, a bit of water, and a thickening ingredient in the form of Xanthan gum.

Since they’re not making any medical claims, and since they’re not selling it, the distillery is free to distribute the hand sanitiser and is not in violation of any laws.

We’re very happy to hear about Shine Distillery & Grill’s great initiative and we’re sure that their beautiful act of solidarity and selflessness will inspire others to think about ways that they too can help their fellow man.
