Dog Spends 2,381 Days At The Shelter And Finds A New Family When He Almost Lost Hope

Higgins was a stray puppy who got adopted in 2011, immediately after he was brought to the shelter. Unfortunately for him, what he thought would be a new life with a loving family and a forever home turned out to be a life spent chained to the dog house, and one year later, he was brought back to the shelter by someone who found him wandering the streets.

Leslie Renner, The Humane Society of Preble County‘s executive director, felt sad for him. No one called or came looking for Higgins and she realized that the previous owners never really cared at all. As years went by, there was always someone that advised Renner to just put Higgins to sleep, but luckily she didn’t want to give up on Higgins. It’s hard for a senior dog to get adopted after more than 6 years at the shelter. Aside from being older than the others, he was not very sociable with other animals, and that is definitely a problem for most people.

One day, one guy named Brendon Reed showed up at the shelter to take Higgins home. Renner could not believe it at first. Apparently, Reed had been eyeing Higgins on the shelter’s Facebook page and always wondered why no one adopted him. According to The Dodo, Reed read about Higgin’s story and immediately felt a connection. Reed just purchased a new house in Xenia and now that he’s all settled, he thought it was time to look for a companion, and Higgins was the right dog for him.

It was Higgins’ 2,381st day at the shelter and that day he finally became the happy dog he deserved to be. In an interview with 2-NEWS, Reed said that Higgins was anxious around him at first, but now he feels completely at home, and enjoys Reed’s backyard and loves to nap on the couch.

Brendon Reed always had a heart for those who deserve a second chance in life. He works for a felony re-entry organization, and his family also has volunteered and adopted from animal shelters.

He recently adopted Higgins, a senior dog at the The Humane Society of Preble County who has been at the shelter for 2,381 Days.

Their story caught a lot of interest online, especially Higgins, who was once adopted when he was a puppy but returned at the shelter as a stray after a year.

Higgins first came to the The Humane Society of Preble County when he was a 6-month-old pup. He was adopted immediately, but as it turns out, his owners didn’t give him the love and care he really deserved.

Year after year, Higgins did not get adopted. Perhaps it was because of his age, his size, or because of his slightly introverted nature that limited his chances of getting adopted. Or maybe he was just waiting for his match, Brendon Reed.

Reed knew it was a match made in dog heaven when he finally met Higgins, after just reading about him on the shelter’s Facebook page. He just purchased his own home and thought it was the perfect time to take Higgins home with him.

Now, Higgins is perfectly content napping on the sofa and running around Reed’s backyard. He finally found his forever home and even has his own Snapchat handle @higginsdoggo where you can keep up with his daily life.
